Dr. Chukwuma Apakama
Dr. Chukwuma Apakama is a weight loss specialist and surgeon of excellence. He is a board-certified surgeon with fellowship training in bariatric surgery, advanced laparoscopic and robotic surgery, and surgical critical care. His added training in surgical critical care has given him the added knowledge and experience in treating very sick and complicated patients.
Dr. Apakama’s training and experience span more than a decade practicing medicine and surgery on 3 continents. He did his initial surgical training in the United Kingdom and his drive for excellence brought him to the United States.
He completed his general surgery residency at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons at Harlem Hospital and then fellowships at prestigious Washington University in St. Louis and Cleveland Clinic Florida. He is board-certified in general surgery and surgical critical care.
Dr. Apakama’s expertise is in bariatric, advanced laparoscopic and robotic surgery. His interests include bariatric surgery using minimally invasive methods of laparoscopy and robotics performing procedures such as sleeve gastrectomy, Roux en Y gastric bypass, revisional bariatric surgery, duodenal switch, and the gastric balloon.
Dr. Apakama is dedicated to the application of minimally invasive techniques as much as possible in the treatment of surgical diseases affording his patients early recovery, minimal pain, and a short length of stay in the safest and most effective ways possible. He works hard to give his patients the best care he can, treating them with dignity, respect, and empathy, being their doctor and advocate, partnering with them to improve their health and well-being.
Dr. Apakama is the author of several articles in medical journals. He is currently a fellow of the American College of Surgeons (ACS), and a member of the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES) and the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgeons (ASMBS).
Dr. Chuck, as he is fondly referred to by his patients, has grown to love North Texas, the people, and the environment. He is focused on helping people win their battle against obesity and surgical diseases to live happier, healthier, and more fulfilling lives.
When he is not at work, Dr. Apakama loves spending time with his family, swimming, and playing soccer and ping pong. He eagerly waits to work with you and for you as your champion, advocate, and cheerleader as you go through the difficult but rewarding process of weight loss and healthier living.
